Kalyani was born to Shri T.V.Panchapakesan and Smt Radha of Tanjore District, Tamilnadu. Brought up in a home where all her parents and elder sisters were singers and great listeners, it was quite natural that music percolated the spirits and heart of young Kalyani. She had her basic music lessons from her mother. Her sisters, disciples of T.R.Balamani imparted advanced training to her in vocal music.

Kalyani’s passion to violin started in the days when she was an avid listener of Lalgudi Jayaraman. Observing her keen interest in the instrument, she was put under the tutelage of Sangeethabhushanam Shri T.S.Krishnaswamy of Sri Shanmukananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbai, at a very young age. She started her musical journey as an accompanying artist at the tender age of 14 and has several hundreds of performances since. She received advanced training in the nuances of swara and raga playing from the legendary vidwan Prof. Shri V.V.Subrahmanyam.

  • Kalyani has given several vocal concerts along with her elder sister Lakshmi and the duo was popular as Matunga Sisters. As a violinist, she has accompanied top ranking artistes like Shri Balamuralikrishna, Smt.Mani Krishnaswamy, Ravi Kiran, Bombay Sisters, Sudha Raghunathan, Bombay Jayashri, and Nityashree Mahadevan. Both a vocalist and violinst, Kalyani effortlessly brings the Gayaki style in her violin playing and is popular for her anusaranai technique. Currently she is a performer with the Swara laya lavanya group

Kalyani is also a commerce graduate from R.A Podar college of Commerce and Economics, Matunga, Mumbai. A manager in the Operations Wing of the Standard Chartered bank for about twenty years, Kalyani has given up her career in banking to devote her time completely to music.
